Revian Hair Cap: An At-Home Treatment Option for Hair Thinning

Hair Thinning in Cincinnati, Ohio

Hair thinning is a common concern for both men and women, and there is rarely a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment. At Dermatology Specialists of Greater Cincinnati, we offer several options for hair loss based on the cause and degree of thinning. One option we may recommend is the Revian® Hair Cap, an at-home light therapy treatment designed to support hair growth.

How Does the Revian Hair Cap Work?

The Revian Hair Cap uses low-level light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, to deliver specific wavelengths of light to the scalp. This light targets the area around the hair follicles and may help stimulate cellular activity, support healthier hair growth, and improve hair density over time.

Treatment is done entirely at home, requiring only 10 minutes daily, and does not involve needles, medications, or downtime, making it an easy option to incorporate into a routine.

Hair Shedding After Weight Loss and GLP-1 Medications

We are seeing more patients concerned about hair shedding while taking GLP-1 medications. In many cases, the hair loss is associated with rapid weight loss, nutritional changes, or the physical stress of significant weight loss. GLP-1 receptors have also been found to be on the hair follicle, so the medication could continue to have an effect even when your ideal weight goal has been achieved.

This type of shedding is known as telogen effluvium and often becomes noticeable several months after the triggering event. Although telogen effluvium is usually temporary, it can be distressing—particularly for patients who already have underlying pattern hair loss or naturally fine or thin hair. Just like facial aging, we recommend you start treating the possible side effects at the onset of the treatment, rather than waiting for substantial negative changes to occur.

For these patients, we can evaluate the cause of the shedding and discuss ways to support healthy hair growth during and after weight loss. The Revian Hair Cap may be one part of that treatment approach.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Revian may be appropriate for men and women with certain types of hair thinning, including androgenetic alopecia, or pattern hair loss.

However, not all hair loss is the same. Hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, medications, illness, stress, genetics, and inflammatory or autoimmune conditions can all affect the hair and scalp. For this reason, we recommend a dermatologic evaluation before beginning treatment.

Depending on the cause of your hair loss, Revian may be used alone or combined with other treatments as part of a more comprehensive hair restoration plan.

Hair Growth Takes Time

Hair grows slowly, so improvement from any hair loss treatment takes time. Consistency is important, and results will vary from person to person. Continued treatment is generally necessary to maintain the benefits of low-level light therapy.

Concerned About Hair Loss or Increased Shedding?

If you have noticed increased shedding, a widening part, a thinner ponytail, a receding hairline, or an overall decrease in hair density, we can help determine what may be causing it.

At Dermatology Specialists of Greater Cincinnati, we take a medical approach to hair loss and develop an individualized treatment plan based on your diagnosis, your goals, and the treatments that make sense for you.
